The reason the prices are higher then in the past is these birds are our
breeding stock and we need enough money from selling any one of them to then replace it with a new purchase on our part.

Local (Northern New England) Deliveries

Delivery is temporarily suspended since we currently do not have a working vehicle. All Purchases will be done at our Auburn home.

Remember since we do not normally ship our birds; you or a friend normally would need to pick them up here in our Auburn Maine home.

If you know what you want and are not particular about personally picking out your Cockatiel here is an exception to us not delivering our birds:

With an extra fee to be deposited (to be discussed by e-mail) by money-order or check and only the exact amount. Then when it clears we will drive and deliver your bird (within certain area) once we know the check or money order deposit has cleared our bank.

This deposited delivery fee will depend on the distance from our home that we have to travel and will be determined by us. We will let any customer desiring us to deliver birds to them if we feel the distance is reasonable for us to travel and how much the fee will be after double checking maps for the time to travel. Deposited fees for local deliveries (Lewiston-Auburn) will start at $20 but might be higher depending where in the L-A area the customer is. Outside of town will definitely have higher deposited fees..

Eventually I will create standard fees for various distances.
We will NEVER deliver on Sunday!

Once we have left our home to deliver one or more birds to you; the deposited delivery fee is non-refundable.

Note:
This local delivery service is suspended during the Snow season, the winter. We will not be delivering during the snow season because we do not want to be traveling in bad dangerous weather and during the winter weather is unpredictable.

During the winter you or a friend need to come to our Auburn home to purchase your bird.

Another Note:
Most of the time Pet shops charge much more for Cockatiels then us
So depending where we are delivering sometimes even with the delivery price included a Cockatiel will still come out the same price or lower then the Pet Shops.

We have decided for the right price to sell all of our Parakeets and mainly
focus on Cockatiels. Since all of our birds are in our dining area we need to make more space so theparakeets are going.

The twelve parakeets are a variety of colors.
About 6 of them were even bred, hatched and hand-fed at our home.
Within the twelve; 3 of the parakeets are albino but not hand-fed.

We are selling all 12 with the cage they are within.

Currently, those older chicks (a Lutino Cockatiels & Parakeets -mostly blue)
we had for sale we decided to keep a while longer.

In a month or two we will consider putting them up for sale again.
We will announce them for sale first in Our Cockatiels Club chat group
then here in this blog. After that also online in Hoobly & Kijiji
and finally in Uncle Henry's which is a local USA NorthEastern want ads publication.

So if you are waiting for a deal on pet birds that is better then the Pet shops, keep your eyes open to this blog

We are considering allowing deposits.
This would be discussed with the potential customer who is willing to wait until the bird they desire is ready and weaned.

We are no longer selling Parakeets.

Only Cockatiels are for sale.

These 2 regular colored

Parakeets are $10 Each.

They have been hand-fed and are hand-tamed.

They are approximately 2 months old as of today!

We also have 2 blue parakeets from the same brood

but will only sell them for the right higher price!

For other color variety of Parakeets ask what we have available and then make us an offer. The offer must be over the $10 price that we ask for our regular green Parakeets. If we like the offer we will accept it, if not we will make a counter-offer for a price for you to purchase these special Parakeets.

Note:

Currently we are not selling

any of our white Parakeets.

These 2 Parakeet chicks are 7 days and 9 days old.

They are from a brood of 5 hatched and possibly 2 more (2 eggs due to hatch soon).

We always take them out of the nest eventually and hand-feed our Cockatiel and Parakeet chicks to make them tame. Sometimes, as in this case, we removed the 2 oldest a little sooner for hand-feeding because the smallest, youngest chicks could not compete for food with these two older baby chicks. So now we are hand-feeding these two and Momma Parakeet is feeding her other 3 while all of us are waiting to see if the last 2 eggs will hatch. Oh and the Daddy Parakeet feeds Momma by regurgitating it into her mouth and then Momma Parakeet she feeds her babies the same way.

Some males and females just take turns keeping the babies warm and feeding them.

In other pairs the Mother Hen stays in the nest almost constantly and the male bird feeds the Mother (often at the nest-box entrance) who in turn feeds her baby chicks. Both methods are true of Parakeets and Cockatiels. It just depends on the pair of birds.

Leg Band Group

If you breed and band your birds or if you have a bird with a band Leg Band Numbers is a good group to join and record your ownership (via it's leg band number) of your bird in case it ever flies away by accident. If your bird does fly away, whether you previously recorded its leg band ID within the group, you can still post your bird's band number in hopes somebody finds it and has the integrity to look for the bird's original owner.

Also, if you are not the first owner; sometimes the group owner will be able to attempt some investigating of the history of your bird, using the leg band number.

Food guidelines for Cockatiels

Seeds and pellets are OK but if possible it should be supplemented with a variety of fruit and vegetables in a Cockatiel's diet.

Here are some guidelines about food:

1. Most vegetables and fresh fruit are good for Cockatiels.
Our Cockatiels love the watermelon rind for one example.

2. Eggs - Eggs can be fried or boiled (no salt, no avocados)
3. Milk - food soaked in Milk (like grain breads)
Cheese also but not spicy or sharp cheeses!
Eggs, Milk and Cheese are the only non-plant proteins that are allowed as far as I know.

4. Bread - Best if not white bread but any bread that is less processed and grainy.

5. Our birds love Cereal
(any cereal with grains but not sweet cereals)
A Cockatiel probably would probably like sugary cereals but it is not good for them.

6. Stay away from anything high in sugar.

7. Stay away from foods high in sodium,
This includes No MSG and all of the sodium by-products.

8. I have also read that the tomato stems, tomato plant and fresh tomatoes can be dangerous for Cockatiels.
Well-cooked spaghetti sauce is probably OK but if even one piece of tomato did not cook well it could be dangerous and if using cans it might have sodium or sodium by-products which are also bad for Cockatiels.
So to be on the safe side we give our birds plain cooked spaghetti or plain cooked noodles for a occasional treat before we add any flavoring or sauce to our portions.

9. Toxic foods are avocados, chocolate (in any form),
anything with caffeine (including coffee and soft drinks)
Alcohol is strictly off-limits!

Local Pet Shops & Safety for your pets.

Not long ago, I received an e-mail implying that most everything found in pet shops are dangerous for animals and especially dangerous for birds in the parrot family.

I was told by a person who seemed to have much experience with birds
that this concern was when the lead scare about China's imported toys
and other products (pet products) was first a concern, but not anymore.
I think it is not a problem anymore because
1. it has been resolved on the Chinese side and
2. on our American side; their imported products are going through stricter quality control from the American distributors of those products.

Of course as another bird owner pointed out that you have to know your
bird or any pet for that matter and what is safe for them.

My example:
All Cockatiels chew.
If you ever got your bird a wooden ladder you will notice that
eventually many of rungs are chewed off.
Here is one example where the bird's safety depends on it's habits:
If you get your bird a plastic toy and chews on that;
you should remove the toy because plastic has too many chemicals for any bird to take into it's body.
Unpainted, unvarnished bird ladders are definitely safe!
As much as my birds are chewers, I never had any problem with them
chewing on their plastic water cups and plastic feeder cups.

If our birds were chewing on them:
1. I might try getting them more chewing toys and if that did not work
then
2. I would try other kinds of watering devices for birds and probably
use glass bowls at the bottom of the cage for feeders.

My conclusion:

Local pet stores in general sell the appropriate products for our pets, our birds and yes even for our Parrot birds like Parakeets and Cockatiels.

However as I already explained in detail, we need to know our own pet's specific individual behavior to know if something normally safe is safe or not.
With new pets, new Cockatiels, trust that the product labeled safe for your pet is safe and just observe your pet, your bird to make sure it is safe even if your animal chews more then most, is more energetic etc.

Also, if you hear from a reliable source and not only from a hyped-up advertiser that a certain item or food might not be safe then adjust your judgments accordingly.

California Cockatiels need a new home

If you live in California please seriously consider giving these 3 Cockatiels a new home. The cage and some food comes with them.
We live in Maine and we are of limited income so we are unable to rescue these Cockatiels in California.

I have three Cocktails currently and due to some unforeseen
circumstances have to get ride of them. I looked on other websites and
they all say to search for a new owner on discussion boards for the
particular animal. I am not selling them, I just want to find them a

of them for over 2 years now and got a new one last Feb. I live in the
Long Beach California area so if anyone is more than willing to take
them and give them a great home please let me know. They are all hand

Handtamed Cockatiels for sale = $40

We still have the above lighter hand-tamed Cockatiel available. The lighter one, is actually a cinnamon/light grey or cinnamon/silver.
Either color combination is worth more then a typical grey cockatiel so we decided to keep it unless we get a really good offer .... like $75.

More hand-tamed chicks will be available soon.
So even as we sell some of our babies; more will be available.

All 3 of these are sold.
The last 2 white-faces were sold on 7-21-2008.
Currently no more white-face Cockatiels are available.

Also, we would be willing to trade one of our handfed Cockatiels for 2 parakeets.
If it is an albino, or ALL white or ALL yellow parakeet, then we would be willing to trade one of our handfed Cockatiels for that special Parakeet. It would be your choice of certain of our handtamed Cockatiels.

UPDATE on The Odd Couple

Bully-boy (the Cockatiel) & Candy (the Parakeet)

The Odd Couple are no longer for sale as a pair.
We purchased another parakeet (a white albino Rosemary named Fluffy) for Candy and gave Bully-boy a mate from our stock of Cockatiels.

Bully-boy is fine with females.
Both pairs have their own honey-moon suites.
(Their own cages.)

Since then we found a buyer for Bully-boy and his potential mate.
This man knew enough about Cockatiels that I am confident he will have no problems or very few with Bully-Boy.

My wife, Rosemary wants to keep the parakeets.
If we had sold this odd couple, we would have purchased 2 new parakeets with the money.
Now we have a pair and Rosemary is talking about acquiring more parakeets in the future. Parakeets talk less clear but they do take up less space since you can fit more in one decent size cage.

Our 4 mature breeders are not for sale.
Also, we are not selling our Albino, white or yellow birds.

All of our other hand-tamed Cockatielsx are for sale at the wonderfully low price of $40 each which is a bargain for hand-tamed birds,
especially since most of them have color mutations
and are not your typical greys.

For example our first brood was 4 chicks.
Those young Cockatiels are in photos in earlier blog posts within this site.
They are hand-tamed and their parents were a grey pearl mother and an albino father.
All 4 from that first brood are white-faced meaning no orange cheek.
We are keeping the albino father and the one albino off-spring.
We have had several more chicks successfully hatch and mature since last November of 2007.
All weaned hand-tamed young Cockatiels are for sale except for the Albino.
Again $40 each for our hand-tamed Cockatiels.

The Odd Couple

Besides other Cockatiels, we had 3 regular Grey Adult Male Cockatiels when we started.
For some reason the gray ones are mean to other Cockatiels, especially to each other; other Greys. And they get out of control on hurting each other during mating seasons.

When we first got our birds the Parakeet, Candy, came with them and was in a separate cage. Eventually, we put Candy the parakeet in our largest cage with most of our Cockatiels.

Strangely enough, Candy decided to be closest friends with our meanest gray Cockatiel, Bully-boy, who the other Cockatiels avoid. Candy got so physically close to Bully-boy as to be crowding him. Bully-boy, the Cockatiel, would peck at Candy, the parakeet as if to say "back-off and give me some space" and Candy would back off for a short time and then crowd him again.
Then the whole cycle would start all over again.

Eventually, because of our grey Cockatiels aggressiveness we had to remove the greys from the main cage and put our two remaining greys in seperate cages.
Apparently we got Bully-Boy and the other grey mixed up. We figured this out because Candy would not go near the cockatiel with whom he was sharing a cage. So we took him and put him with the other grey and he, Bully-boy, right away went up to Candy as if he missed him. Bully-boy was no longer annoyed with his new friend. When his little friend was gone and was back it seemed that Bully-boy realized that the annoying parakeet, Candy, was a good friend to be missed after all. Bully-boy no longer acts annoyed by Candy his little friend.

Since Bully-boy, the Cockatiel and Candy the parakeet get along so well,
we would only sell them together on the condition they are kept together in the same cage. Since Bully-boy does not usually get along with other Cockatiels: it is best that Bully-boy and Candy share a cage with no other birds.
$60 asking price for the two of them together.

We do not guarantee gender because we only know
the gender for sure of those who have mated.

Any cockatiel that mates and is nesting, or is sitting on eggs or has young that are not yet weaned will not be for sale.
Even if listed for sale.

These 4 photos are of 3 more of our birds that have nice color mutations.
2 are Lutino Pied and one is Lutino-Pearl.

All of the birds below have paired off, mated, nested and laid their eggs.
Two chicks hatched in the last few days so they should be weaned and ready for sale in about 8 weeks or so. From that brood more are due soon.
We have 3 other pairs with eggs so including the chicks that just hatched.
Your choices of Cockatiels with color mutations will increase by the time they all hatch and are weaned about 11 weeks or so. (End of July and early August)

Introduction to The OC.

This blog is about Our Cockatiels.
To find out about our Cockatiels available to your loving home scroll further down to our other blog entries.

Our first bird was a yellow parakeet that we named Big Bird.
Then we had another Parakeet.
Then after that we had various kinds of pets.

For the past several years we have had Cockatiels.
Until recently it was usually one or two at a time.

Recently we acquired enough Cockatiels to start breeding.
We had hope at least several pairs will mate but and several pairs have successfully mated and hatched Cockatiel chicks.

From our first clutch of eggs, we have 4 young Cockatiels about 3 months old.
Since the mother (Pearly) abandoned them when they were only a few days old and only the father (Snowy) fed them, eventually we decided to help him by hand-feeding them once in a while, in between his feeding them.
From our most recent successful clutch (Romeo & Juliet's mating) 2 of the chicks hatched, are weaned, eating on their own and are doing well.
Their mother has laid more eggs but the mother and father refuse to sit on them.
Another pair with our encouragement (setting the eggs in thei9r nest-box) has adopted those eggs and since laid more eggs.
At times many of our Cockatiels will be for sale.

We do not ship our Cockatiels due to the extra cost and due to the great risk to the birds.
One breeder charges $149 starting, just for the shipping cost.
Depending where you live and how soon you want your birds, that shipping cost will go higher!
Therefore buyers need to live close enough that you do not mind driving to Auburn Maine where we live. Or if you send a friend with the payment (cash) who lives close enough to pick up the Cockatiel (s) .

Cockatiels make a wonderful hobby and wonderful pets!
For children and those who want to handle their birds often, we suggest hand-tamed Cockatiels. Just when out of the cage for play and/or handling make sure your Cockatiel is safe from other pets like cats and dogs.
No matter how much a bird seems to get along with your dog or cat; when your bird is not safely in it's cage NEVER leave them alone together.
You just never know when the hunting, meat-eating instinct of a dog or cat will take over. Better safe then sorry!
Also, when your bird is out of the cage make sure no doors are open and make sure there are no windows without screens open. It only takes a second of someone going in and out of your house for your bird to escape and fly away. Even trimmed wings can grow out surprisingly quick!

If your Cockatiel is going to be in his/her cage most of the time then the cost of hand-tamed birds might not be a requirement.

(Note: Trimmed wings or not, your Cockatiel should have exercise time of at least one hour per day outside their cage whether it is flying around the house, walking around on the outside top of it's indoor cage, or just perching on your shoulder.
A little freedom and exercise will make your Cockatiel much happier.
This is something we have started to be more conscientious about.
If your bird is not hand-tamed or initially bites as you remove it from the cage then do what I do with our more aggressive birds and wear gloves.)

In the case where your bird is in it's cage most of the time, especially if it is one Cockatiel then make sure that it has one or two bird toys in its cage and that you talk to it often.
Cockatiels are a fairly smart bird and need stimulation as well as companionship to be happy and well-adjusted. Even if you do have 2 or more Cockatiels in the same cage; toys and speaking to them is still good stimulation to prevent boredom.
Preventing boredom is important because a bird can overgroom itself and even pull it's own feathers out as a result of such boredom.
One of their toys should be a grooming toy or a knotted rope with frayed ends because the Cockatiel will try grooming that some instead of over-grooming itself.
This is helpful no matter how many birds you have but especially important if your Cockatiel is alone in it's cage.
If you give most any bird a toy with a mirror; they will think they have a friend in the cage.
This can help with loneliness and boredom.
However, it may also cause the bird to be less attached to you.

Please research through reading, the internet, and asking questions of pet shop clerks before purchasing a Cockatiel. The more you know and understand about these wonderful birds the better relationship you and your Cockatiel will have with each other.

Hand-feeding Cockatiel chicks

If you want to hand-feed your baby birds to make them hand-tamed and more affectionate you can wait until they are at the age you are comfortable with.
At a very young age they will need to be fed every hour.
For more details purchase a Cockatiel handbook (the paper back ones are inexpensive).
Just remember at sometime after 4 weeks they begin to wean so hand-feeding should be before that..... as far as making them hand-tamed the younger the better.
They wean between 6 and 8 weeks, usually. This does depend somewhat on the individual chick.

Even if you are not planning on hand-feeding and the parenst are not feeding their chicks then you have no choice but to hand-feed. If neither parent is feeding their chicks and they are older then 15 hours but so young as to be not yet weaned then you need to take over their feeding.

It just happens that we use their powder formula for hand-feeding our young chicks
and their Rainbow product for our adult birds.
(No. I get nothing from them for saying that!)

Most people use a syringe to hand-feed when the birds are very young.
We found the syringe builds up pressure and squirts out too much formula too quick.
So we use either an eye dropper (when the formula is still watery enough) or a Pipette.
The Pipette is plastic and only $1 each at one of our local pet shops.
What is good about this Pipette is since it is only one dollar and plastic; then we can cut farther up the tube to make it less narrow as the formula needs to be mixed thicker which is as the chicks get older.

Eventually when we notice the chicks are biting a lot on the litter in their nest-box and/or brooder then we try with a very small plastic measuring spoon to see if they are ready to eat without a syringe or Tubette. The reason I suggest a plastic spoon is because chicks beaks are not as hard as when they are older and that is just my personal precaution. When using the plastic spoon as the chick bites at it, turn it up towards the bird's face like when spoon-feeding a baby.

Our main computer that had those photos (of Rosemary hand-feeding chicks) stopped working. This paragraph was added in using a friend's borrowed laptop.
Check back on this blog post once in a while because the next time we have chicks ready to handfeed I will try to add a picture of my wife feeding a chick with the Pipette so you can see what I am talking.

At the point they are biting at the spoon and eating well we will mix a little of their smaller seeds a including some millet seed in their formula to begin get them ready for weaning.
This will vary from chick to chick because depending on their development and even their personality some chicks might not be ready as soon to eat off of the plastic measuring spoon.

Seeds especially millet seed are easier then pellets for the very young to eat when the first begin to wean. Since at this point your birds will begin to explore their home put some of such seeds in a food dish (preferably a low flat dish for now), we will also spread it on the floor of their brooder house and/or their nest-box.
Shortly after this it will be time to give them a shallow water cup/dish.

Don't forget to talk to others (in person or by e-mail) for suggestions as well as asking your local pet shop if any of their sales clerks who have experience with Cockatiels and/or hand-feeding birds!

These are what I consider helpful suggestions.
Please refer to Cockatiel Handbooks and to the instructions which come with hand-feeding formula, as well as finding someone who knows about this for detailed answers to your questions.

Currently we only have one typical Grey (probably a male) for the price of $15 as we recently sold 4 of our Cockatiels.
And our other Grey has mated.
He is nesting and brooding over his eggs with his mate.

This is also true of our other adult birds for that price have mated and are nesting.

If these new mating pairs work out as good parents with healthy chicks then we will be asking much more per pair for these breeding pairs even though they are not hand-tamed.
The reason is a successful breeding pair are worth much more then 2 individual separate birds.

3 Hand-tamed Cockatiels For Sale

One of 3 hand-tamed youngsters for sale.

The 3 Cockatiels shown on this blog-post had hatched around Thanksgiving week.
Their father (Snowy) was an albino Cockatiel
and their mother (Pearly) was a Pearl Cockatiel
(gray/white/white-pearled-spots with no yellow, no orange cheeks).

There were 4 eggs. All 4 hatched.
All 4 birds are hand-tamed.
All 4 are healthy.
The reason their is only 3 on this blog is because
we have decided to keep Snowy Jr. who is an albino like his father.
In another blog post sometime I will show pictures of our 2 albinos, the 2 Snowys.

They are Thanksgiving 2007 Cockatiels,

I had a hard time getting a clear picture of the birds.
